In 2005, Belcolombo closed down his Gallery in France with the aim of travelling around to find a place, a region that he liked well enough to settle in.
In 2007, he decided to leave the Beaujolais region near Lyon in France, to go and live in Morocco where he had been a regular visitor since 1973. He now lives and creates his paintings in his Studio/Gallery in the city of Meknes, Morocco.
First of all a watercolourist, then in the course of his personal development and research, Belcolombo turned towards painting with oils, and now uses the palette knife technique. The obvious strength of character that prevails in the execution of a painting is accentuated by his innate sense of colour. Working in complementarity, his palette is based on a sumptuous blue. This is then complemented by a multitude of strong yellows and vibrations, cheerful, with great cohesion of style characterized by the omnipresence of movement in content, colours, as well as obviously in the construction. Through the originality of his style, the well-known artist/painter Belcolombo allows us to discover another vision of painting. By multiplying the ranges of colours, subjects and forms, he translates the landscapes resulting from his many travels "Venice, Tuscany, Morocco, Provence".
Belcolombo interprets nature in a very personal but non-descriptive manner. Flowers appear to be the theme most often tackled. His compositions are very dramatic; by means of various processes, they achieve this very special quality: the way the flowers are placed and grouped is experienced a little like a choreographic arrangement; there is rhythm and movement; the exaltation of pure, vivid, very cheerful colours gives a tone that is almost orchestral, radiant; the use of a technique known as "palette knife", where the thick and vigorous texture accentuates the powerful character of the work. Belcolombo's flowers, always in full bloom, are alive, become a sort of dialogue with those who see them, to the point that one wants to touch them!... To the "connoisseur" as well as to the casual "passerby" they communicate a cheerfulness, a vigour, an energy such that one "feels good" in front of these paintings. It's just that nothing is trivial: Belcolombo, behind an appearance of "artificial simplicity", comes close to the essence of things.
